The 500 Series was a line of [[electromechanical]] sirens produced by [[Federal Signal Corporation|Federal Sign & Signal]].
It went through a lot of prototyping, ranging from a coded unit that allows it to make a "pulsed" signal, along with variants of single and dual tone models, even different phase motors were tested. They finally settled on one design that was compact, yet effective. This model unfortunately was advertised as a "mid-range" siren by Federal, which in turn caused their [[Thunderbolt]] siren to outsell it by a long shot.

The earlier 500, mostly seen around Los Angeles, have a shorter projector unlike the later ones, they were offered in 9/12 port, 12 port, and more rarer 8 port. Some models had support bars inside the projector to mitigate warping. Some models used the STH-10 chopper and stator, and had a larger horn.

The 500 is a simple design, built to be all-enclosed and low-maintenance. It consists of a rotating siren unit placed on top of a stationary stand, which also houses the collector ring tube. The 500 is essentially a rotational version of Federal's various rotational sirens, which include the [[Federal Signal STH-10|STH-10]] (early 500-SH), [[Federal Signal Model 5|Model 5]] (later 500-SH), and Model 5T (3rd gen 500-AT). The 500 series of sirens was designed by Federal to be roof-mounted, with a mounting platform built into the siren which would make it easier to install. However, many municipalities chose to ignore this and installed them on poles anyway. it is unknown why exactly Federal chose to do this, but it is entirely possible that Federal did not want to cut into the Thunderbolt's sales, and made it more difficult to install on a pole. This would be the case for the entire production run of the siren.
The 500-DHTT is a dual horn variant of the 500, they were offered with a 15 or 20 horsepower motor. In 1957 they increased the length of the rotator shaft, giving the siren head more clearance of the rotator body. They were produced as late as 1965-67.

The Model 500 is a series of midrange rotational mechanical sirens that was produced by Federal Signal, intended to provide a midrange option for cities who did not want to invest in the longer range, but more expensive Thunderbolt.
