Engine-driven sirens make use of a gasoline or diesel engine to power the siren, and this can be both for directly driving the rotor, or as a generator. These were only produced during World War 2 and the early Cold War, before electric sirens became more widespread and practical. Due to the high maintenance and fuel costs, as well as the impracticality of running a gas-driven siren, almost none are produced today and all gas-driven sirens were retired or converted to electric by the 1980s, and are very rare. Engine-driven sirens are more common in foreign countries where electric power may not be as readily or reliably available, such as China.
