Tri Lite, Incorporated (also known as Tri Lite MARS) is an Elmhurst, IL-based manufacturer of signaling equipment such as warning beacons and sirens, with a primary focus on lighting. Founded in 1987 after breaking away from the larger Trippe Manufacturing Company, or Trippe Lite, Tri Lite has since gone on to become a relatively prominent player in the industry.

History

Tri Lite's story goes back to 1922, when Graham Trippe, a Chicago-based inventor, obtained a patent for a new precision-focused automobile headlight, which Trippe named the “Speed Light”. The Speed Light proved to be extremely popular, winning awards at the 1928 and 1929 Paris Exposition of Innovation. In the early 1930s, Trippe would found the Trippe Manufacturing Company, also known as Tripp Lite. Tripp Lite would later expand into the production of rotating warning lights, which would be commonly used by US police, fire, and emergency services departments' vehicles. The company would go on to broaden their products and services even more in the later decades, with their successful foray into PC accessories in the mid-to-late 1980s providing an opportunity to steer the business in a different direction. As such, Tripp Lite would continue as a manufacturer of various computer-related products. In 1987, Tri Lite was created as new company focused on maintaining Trippe Light's lighting venture and would soon after acquire the MARS Signal Light Company in early 1991.

Model VS (Electromechanical Siren)

The Model VS is a small directional electromechanical siren, intended for use at docks or industrial areas. The siren is extremely simple in terms of design, consisting of nothing more than a 6-port rotor and stator, a small 12 V DC or 110/115/120 V AC motor (DC units are referred to as Model VS1s while AC units are referred to as Model VS110s), with a small pedestal mount holding the assembly up. Finger guards, as well as a grill in front of the stator, are located between the ports to prevent injury, as the siren is small enough to be handheld. The siren reaches dB at 10 ft. The Model VS can be operated continuously for 60 seconds; running it any longer could cause the motor to overheat. The siren is 7" long, 5½" wide, and 6½" tall, weighing about 3¾ lbs. It is commonly resold by several other companies, usually under different names.
