While there are many notable large sirens that are mainly used for outdoor warning uses, there are many other situations where such a large siren is unnecessary, impractical or too expensive. Small sirens exist mainly for industrial use, often being used as a general alarm, shift change/break whistle, or other purposes. Small sirens are also commonly used at rural fire stations where a larger siren may be too expensive or unnecessary. Industrial small sirens share many characteristics with vehicular sirens in both size and appearance, with many vehicular sirens sharing the same cores as small industrial sirens. Despite this, they are used for widely different purposes. Small sirens are typically directional in nature, with an adjustable stand allowing them to tilt and face a certain direction.
